The cooking system in Zelda: Breath of the Wild is an extensive one and is necessary for your character’s survival in the game. Unfortunately, there’s no way to identify which ingredients you need to cook while you are in the game as there’s no in-game system to track recipes.
Within the game, you can see the ingredients used to prepare a meal in your inventory. However, you have to commit them to memory or write them down somewhere to track them. If you can’t do either of these, then there’s no way to know the required recipes to cook a meal later. The only alternative will be to search for such a recipe outside the game.

In several side quests, such as “A Parent’s Love,” there isn’t any clue about the recipes you need to cook. So, you have to secure them on your own if you are to accomplish anything.

How to Bake a Cake in the “A Parent’s Love” Side Quest
Before you encounter the side quest, you first have to locate Tarrey Town, which wouldn’t exist until you build it yourself. And you can only do this in the “From the Ground Up” side quest. Once you arrive at this town, proceed to its southernmost end and find the house situated there. There, you will find a mother tending to her sick child.
Approach her – the mother – and talk to her. This will result in her agreeing to ask the child’s father for advice on the child’s health later that night.
When nighttime arrives, sneak to the backend of the house and eavesdrop on the parents’ conversation. You’d hear them talk about how the sick child doesn’t eat, and how the only thing she wants to eat is cake.
This is your cue to set out, gather required ingredients, and bake a cake for the family.
BoTW Cake Recipe
You can find the BoTW cake recipe in a cookbook in the library of Hyrule Castle. If you do not want to go looking for the cookbook, these are the ingredients you will need to bake the cake:
- Tabantha wheat
- Goat butter
- Cane sugar
- Monster extract
Where to Find the BoTW Cake Recipe
Acquiring these ingredients is not a difficult task; you simply need to find the vendors who have the items you need. The tips below can help:
- If you are in need of goat butter, you will find the vendor in Kakariko village, Lanaryu Region. This place is located in the southern part of the Wetlands.
- If you want to buy sugar and wheat, go to the peddler at Rito village. This location is toward the northwest corner of the map.
- If what you are looking for is monster extract, locate the secret vendor Kilton. This might be a bit challenging as Kilton is constantly on the move. Also, ensure you have monster parts before you find Kilton.
Baking the Cake
To bake the cake, add all the ingredients together in a cooking pot. (You can find cooking pots close to towns and stables.) After this, proceed to your inventory to hold the ingredients.
Subsequently, go to the cooking pot and hit the “A” button when the cook option pops up to start the process.
Finally, take the cake to the child’s mom; it will make her and the other members of the family happy.
Additionally, you can use this cake to complete the “A Royal Recipe” side quest. If you give the cake to quest giver, he will reward you with 100 rupees.
